Post 7 ENG 1200.10 Deductive Reasoning

Deductive Reasoning

Deductive reasoning moves from the general to the particular. It takes a general premise and deduces particular conclusions. A "valid" deductive argument is one in which the conclusion necessarily follows from the premise. (All dogs have fleas. This is a dog. Therefore this dog has fleas.) The premise may not be "true" but the form of the argument is nevertheless "valid". (If all dogs do have fleas, and if this is a dog, then this dog must necessarily have fleas.)
An "invalid" deductive argument will contain something in the conclusion wholly new and independent from those things mentioned in the premise of the argument. (If all dogs have fleas, then my dog must have ticks. But ticks are not mentioned in the premise.) Sometimes it is not so obvious that something new has been introduced in the conclusion. (Only man is a rational being. Therefore, no woman is a rational being. This argument equivocates on the meaning of "man." In the premise, the word "man" means mankind, including woman. In the conclusion, the word "woman" is used to designate that portion of mankind which is of the female gender as distinguished from the male portion called "man." So a new concept — a distinction in gender — is introduced in the conclusion.)

Post 6 ENG 1200.10 How to write an authority Essay

One of the assessment for this week is to write an authority document, so I start doing my research about the topic and supporting ideas, but how I can start writing an authority essay. Then I found these tips that I think can help me trough this process.

Rather than explicitly stating your opinion, in academic writing often your opinion can emerge through your choice of sources and how you present and examine the ideas of others.
In academic writing, we tend to avoid making categorical or emphatic statements. This is in order to:
  • acknowledge that there may be exceptions
  • acknowledge that there may be a range of possible causes or explanations
  • avoid making statements that cannot adequately be supported or defended.
  • qualify your ideas
  • explain your ideas
  • explore your ideas.
  • referral to tendencies
  • using qualifiers and quantifiers
  • acknowledging exceptions and limitations.

Post 5 ENG 1200.10 My Hero

Nelson Mandela

“I have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve. But if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die.”

Nelson Mandela was one of the 21st  century hero that I most sympathized. He fights against racism in Africa and spent much of his life in prison. While imprisoned he studied and obtained an LLB through the University of South Africa. Nelson Mandela never wavered in his devotion to democracy, equality and learning. Despite terrible provocation, he never answered racism with racism. His life is an inspiration to all who are oppressed and deprived; and to all who are opposed to oppression and deprivation.

Post 3 ENG 1200.10 Ohh … Melancholy

Ohh … Melancholy

The weather can change the mood of the people, and I’m not the exception of the rule. I was looking at the rain through the window of my apartment, and I was thinking on my mom. What is she is doing now? Maybe it is raining too and she is at bed thinking of me. I can’t even call her and ask her how she slept last night. I need to wait till next Friday because I used the 10 minutes call for this week. It is only 90 miles from Cuba, but feels like is in another planet almost impossible to go. Everything changes more that 50 years ago when one man decided to changes the future of the all country; separating families and taking roots away. I’m one of those thousands of Cubans that choose to live in exile away from the family, away from the city, away from the friends. It's been 10 years since I left, but it hurts like it was yesterday.

post 4 ENG 1200.10 Cows vs. Cats

Equal

Many people believe that a black cat brings bad luck and also, that anyone who finds the one perfect, pure white hair in an all-black cat and plucks it out without being scratched, will find great wealth and good luck in love. There are so many myths about cats in general that is hard to believe how these small creatures can have so many powers.

The fact is that my sister has one black cat; her name is Aby, and she gave birth two little kittens. They are very small so my sister doesn’t need to buy cat food because they are still drinking milk from their mom, and it is in that moment where I have this idea. Next time I can bring my friends they can have a hot chocolate with Aby’s milk…. ajaja I can imagine their faces, like if I was crazy. I don’t see the differences between a cow and a cat. They are both animal that produce milk for their babies.

The only difference is that the human choose to take away cow’s baby milk and made hot chocolate, coffee latte, butter, Ice-cream, cheese, etc.

Next time when you are enjoying a cup of hot chocolate I challenge you to think on my sister cat.

Post 2 Eng 1200.10 Blogging is the new Facebook in my life.

The concept is easy, but for me it is not really fun to be in  front of my PC trying to create a blog, posts , and comments. I feel like is to much because I have the same professor twice , so my blogs are double than the rest of the students. It is obvious that my first language is not English, and that makes everything moreeeee difficult for me. However I know that the key to success is to be consistent and practice, and practice, and practice…… so here I am, instead of posting comments of my friends party, or my cousin's  baby shower  on Facebook , I'm at my sofa trying to make three lines and hoping that by the end of this semester I can be a blogging master or at least a better writer.

Post 1 Eng 1200.10 Because We Deserve a Better Cafeteria

Because We Deserve a Better Cafeteria

Good sleep and a balanced nutrition are very important for the success of every student, but what happen when you spend two or more day at school and the only choice of food that you have is from a BENDING MACHINE..

The most of this food are high in sugar and carbohydrate.

If we talk about a community college where the tuition is around $1500 per semester can be ok, but if we said that the bending machine is located at South University where the tuition per quarter is $5000 dollars. Where all that money goes?

As student of this University we should have a better alimentation
